Why establish web standards and the benefits of web standards

May 16, 2016 pm 12:08 PM

This chapter will introduce to you why web standards should be established and the benefits of web standards. It has certain reference value. Friends in need can refer to it. I hope it will be helpful to you.

Most of us have profound experience. Whenever the mainstream browser version is upgraded, the website we just built may become outdated, and we need to upgrade or rebuild the website. For example, in the typical "browser war" from 1996 to 1999, in order to be compatible with Netscape and IE, websites had to write different codes for these two browsers. Similarly, whenever new network technologies and interactive devices appear, we also need to create a new version to support this new technology or new device, such as WAP technology that supports mobile Internet access. There are countless similar problems: the website code is bloated and complicated, which wastes a lot of our bandwidth; the DHTML special effects for a certain browser block some potential customers; the code that is not easy to use makes it impossible for people with disabilities to browse the website, etc. This is a vicious cycle and a huge waste.

How to solve these problems? People of insight have already begun to think about the need to establish a universally recognized standard to end this disorder and chaos. Commercial companies (Netscape, Microsoft, etc.) finally realized the benefits of unified standards, so under the organization of W3C (W3C.org), website standards began to be established (marked by the release of XML1.0 on February 10, 1998), and Promote and implement under the supervision of the Web Standards Organization (webstandards.org).

Simply put, The purpose of website standards is to:

Provide the most benefits to the most website users Ensure that any website document can be effective in the long term Simplify the code, Reduce construction costs, make the website easier to use, and adapt to more different users and more network devices. When browser versions are updated, or new network interaction devices appear, ensure that all applications can continue to execute correctly. For website designers and developers, following website standards is using standards; for your website users, website standards are the best experience.

Benefits of adopting website standards

Benefits to website visitors:

File downloading and page display speed are faster; content can be accessed by more users (including people with disabilities such as blindness, low vision, color blindness, etc.); content can be accessed by a wider range of devices (including screens) Readers, handheld devices, search robots, printers, refrigerators, etc.) Users can customize their own presentation interface through style selection All pages can provide print-friendly versions

Benefits to website owners:

Less code and components, easier to maintain, reduced bandwidth requirements (simpler code), and reduced costs. For example: When ESPN.com was redesigned using CSS, it saved more than two terabytes of bandwidth per day. It is easier to be searched by search engines. It is easy to revise without changing the page content. It provides a printed version without copying the content. It improves the usability of the website. In the United States, there are strict legal provisions (Section 508) that restrict government websites to meet certain usability requirements, and other countries have similar requirements.
