Vertica基于列存储。基于列存储的设计相比传统面向行存储的数据库具有巨大的优势。
同时Vertica支持MPP（massively parallel processing）等技术，查询数据时Vertica只需取得需要的列，而不是被选择行的所有数据，其平均性能可提高50x-1000x倍。
Vertica的设计者多次表示他们的产品围绕着高性能和高可用性设计。由于对MPP技术的支持，可提供对粒度，可伸缩性和可用性的优势。每个节点完全独立运作，完全无共享架构，降低对共享资源的系统竞争。在此架构下，添加更多的节点可增加更多的容量和性能。当一个节点出现故障时，不会对整个系统产生影响。其他节点会完成故障节点的任务。
Vertica的数据库使用标准的SQL，同时Vertica的架构非常时候云计算，包括虚拟化，分布式多节点运行等，并且可以和Hadoop/MapReduce进行集成。
HP表示可以单独购买Vertica单纯软件包或购买与四分之一机架（96-core），半机架（192-core）和全机架（384-core）惠普刀片系统捆绑在一起的产品。
HP表示他们的竞争力在于成本只有其竞争对手的一半，并提供多倍于竞争对手的性能。从目前的局面来看，Oracle Exadata System是其主要竞争对手。
Vertica是不是取代Oracle Exadata OLTP的正确选择？当涉及到数据仓库和核心分析时Exadata可能还是好的选择。Vertica的优势在于更加精确、灵活，且维护成本要便宜很多。
惠普首席执行官李艾科表示，这款系统将“为下一代业务智能提供实时分析”，可用于网站流量分析、零售销售的趋势分析或者药物研究。Vertica的客户名单包括Groupin、Twitter、Zynga、Verizon、Comcast、Sprint、At&T等。
惠普已经涉足分析领域，但是通过这款新设备“惠普可以真正打开这个市场，尤其是将分析作为一项服务的市场”。(李智/译)
