Hey travelers! I'm Taylor Brooks, combat designer at ArenaNet. I’m going to introduce you to a new combat feature in Guild Wars 2: The Wilds of Zense: the Kedan Spear Training Specialization. By training with the lowland kdan of the Janser Wilds, you'll learn how to use a spear in entirely new ways on land.

Starting tomorrow and over the next few weeks, we’ll be detailing how each class uses the land version of the spear. Today, I want to start with some things you need to know about spears.

Introduction to using spears in the Jense Wilderness

Q1: Spears are one-handed weapons on land Or a two-handed weapon?

A: The spear is a two-handed weapon on land and underwater.

Q2: Are the spear skills used on land the same as those used underwater?

A: No! Each class has a new set of spear weapon skills when used on land. They also come with brand new skill effects and animations that we’re excited for everyone to see!

Q3: If every class gets a spear, does that mean they all have the same effect?

A: Spears are a versatile weapon and they will reflect this in the game. Some classes use the spear as a ranged throwing weapon, some as a melee weapon, and still others use it as a magic focus to cast powerful spells.

#Q4: How can I unlock the land version of the spear?

A: The ability to use the land-based version of the spear will be unlocked when Guild Wars 2: Genser Wilds launches. They will be located after the first specialization training in the "Kedan Specialization" series, and will be unlocked for use early in the story, or purchased and unlocked in WvW. We want everyone to have access to the Spear as early as possible in their journey into the Jungle Wilds. As with all other combat features, players who own Guild Wars 2: Genser Wilds will automatically unlock Kedan Spear Training in PvP.

Q5: Can the underwater spear I am using now be used on land?

A: Yes, the spear can be switched between underwater and land weapon slots. However, it is important to note that to equip a spear in both slots, you will need at least two spears.

Q6: What spear skins can I use on land?

A: Currently all spear skins can be used on land. We also plan to add new spear skins to our future collection of weapon skins.

Q7: Will there be a new legendary spear?

A: In the first update after the release of the DLC, we will launch a new legendary spear. In addition, the legendary armory will be expanded to store up to four Shark God "Otaki" to ensure that you can use all versions of the spear anytime, anywhere!

Q8: Since Engineers and Elementalists can use spears on land in the expansion, can they also use spears underwater?

A: Professions that currently cannot use spears underwater still cannot use spears underwater.

Q9: Do I need to own "Guild Wars 2: Genser Wilds" to use spears on land?

A: Yes, this combat function requires DLC.

Q10: Will there be a test event for the spear?

A: Yes! There will be a testing event from June 27th at 9:00am Pacific Time (UTC-7) to June 30th at 10:00pm Pacific Time (UTC-7) where everyone will have a chance to try out the Spear and give us feedback. We will announce more information about the testing event soon.

Q11: Will there be a live broadcast?

A: At that time, your favorite developer (me) will host a live broadcast with Cal Cohen and Roy Marks. We'll be showcasing the new spear abilities and taking a deep dive into what you can expect and care about. Be sure to tune in to our Twitch channel on June 21st at noon Pacific Time (UTC-7)!
