Tesla cuts Model Y price up to 15% via \'environmental bonus\' and warns Model 3 price may go up after tariffs in Europe

Tesla is cutting all Model Y prices withthe equivalent of $6,485 (€6,000) for those who take delivery by the end of the month to help it clear inventory and pad the Q2 shipment numbers in Germany.

It is also warning Model 3 buyers to grab one by the end of June, too, before the import tariffs that the European Commission just announced for electric cars imported from China kick in. Across Europe, Tesla is giving free Supercharger miles, too, all with the purpose to improve its sales numbers before the quarter ends.

After its sales dropped more than 60% year-on-year in May against a backdrop of a 30% slump in the local EV market, Tesla is once again compensating the government's lost "environmental bonus" for its bestselling car there.

The Model Y was the world's most popular vehicle last year, but the drastic sales slump in Germany probably means that Tesla will lose that title this year there, so it is taking steps to shake up demand.

The so-called Tesla Environmental Award brings the price of the base Model Y RWD down to€38,990, a pretty incredible 15% discount level that was heretofore only reserved for second-hand EVs.

The new Model Y with the longest range also gets a 14% price cut, making it a rather irresistible bargainfor an electric SUV that can cover 600km (372 miles) on a charge at the WLTP range estimate.

Tesla, however, is rushing to stem the drastic drop in Q2 shipments and show more favorable numbers to investors, so the big Model Y discount is valid for already configured cars if the buyer takes delivery by June 30th.

The deep Model Y price cut via the "environmental bonus" is also not stackable with APR deals, such as the "0% or 1.99% interest offer for financing certain Model Y vehicles."

Germany put an abrupt halt to EV incentives last year on account of federal budget challenges, leaving automakers holding the bag and offering compensation to buyers to fulfil their price promises.

At the time, Tesla also said it will match the government's subsidy largesse through the end of last year. In 2024, it is seemingly ready to continue giving an equivalent discount when needed, to move more Model Y cars off the factory lots.
