YouTube breaks ad blockers once again while testing a viewing limitation

While YouTube Premium is offered in most markets for reasonable prices, many users are using ad blocking tools, and Google's fight against them comes into the spotlight from time to time. Earlier today, the tech giant confirmed that the latest YouTube update breaks ad blockers (at least some of them), but limited YouTube access without logging in is also being tested.

YouTube's statement that was issued earlier today reads the following: "YouTube is improving its performance and reliability in serving both organic and ad video content. This update may result in suboptimal viewing experiences for viewers with ad blockers installed. Ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service, and we’ve been urging viewers for some time to support their favorite creators and allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience."

Earlier this week, several third parties noticed that YouTube was testing server-side ad injection. This means that the ad segments are now blended with the video and the viewer's device receives a single stream. Previously, the video and the ad came from two sources and were combined in the web browser or standalone YouTube viewing app upon playing.

The login restrictions lead viewers that are not signed in to face a "Sign in to confirm that you’re not a bot" message. For now, this is a feature still being tested. If adopted, it could have a serious impact on shared YouTube videos as well as third-party apps that load YouTube videos without requiring a Google/YouTube account.

Since Google often tests controversial features without taking things further, this might turn out to be another of those cases.
