Sonos changes terms and conditions and may now pass on data to third parties

Sonos changed its General Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) in June 2024. The previous T&Cs, last updated in March 2023, contained a clear security clause that stated: "Sonos does not and will not sell personal information about our customers." This passage has now been removed.

The new T&Cs state that data may be shared with "vendors or agents working on our behalf for the purposes described in this statement". This means that Sonos customers' personal data could now potentially be shared more widely than was previously the case. Of particular concern to many users is the lack of a clear guarantee that no personal data will be sold.

To make matters worse, users of Sonos speakers can hardly defend themselves against this. Anyone who does not accept the terms and conditions cannot use their Sonos app. This controversy was initiated by the US-American YouTuber Louis Rossman who is known for his support of the right-to-repair movement and his criticism of Apple 's corporate policy.
