Unfolded Circle has now released the Remote 3 on Kickstarter, its alternative to the Logitech Harmony Elite (curr. $414.95 on Amazon). Please note that while the Harmony Elite remains perfectly usable, Logitech no longer actively maintains it. Also, the Harmony Elite relies on a web client for configuration purposes, which Logitech could disable at some stage.
By contrast, Unfolded Circle insists that the Remote 3 runs locally and without a subscription. Nonetheless, the universal remote can connect to devices that support infrared (IR), Bluetooth or 802.11 a/g/b/n/ac Wi-Fi. For reference, the Remote 3 can connect to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks.
Additionally, the 9.7 mm thick remote contains accelerometer, ambient light and gyroscope sensors, along with a touchscreen display and RGB-backlit buttons. Moreover, Unfolded Circle has integrated a pair of microphones and a small speaker for voice control functionality; please see the company's product page for more technical details. The Remote 3 starts at €279 on Kickstarter as a standalone unit. Alternatively, Unfolded Circle is offering the Remote 3 and Dock 3 as a bundle for €299 or the Dock 3 itself for €89.
