LG announces that new Apple iPad Pro tandem OLED displays will soon be headed to laptops

The latest iPad Pro 11 (curr. $944 on Amazon) and iPad Pro 12.9 are some of the first devices advertised as featuring tandem OLED panels, along with the Honor Magic6 RSR Porsche Design. To recap, Apple claims that the stacked tandem structure allows its new iPad Pro tablets to achieve 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, as well as 1,000 nits full panel brightness. By contrast, comparably sized conventional OLED displays peak at 400-600 nits across their entire panels.

Please note that while Dell has equipped the new Snapdragon X Elite version of the XPS 13 with a tandem OLED display too, this panel fails to get any brighter than other OLED panels in other XPS 13 models. With that being said, the new OLED panel mirrors LG Display's official specifications in other areas. Incidentally, LG Display has now announced that it has started mass producing a tandem 13-inch panel intended for laptops, which it claims is a 'world's first'.

In a press release, LG Display states that its tandem OLED panel is three times brighter than conventional OLED panels, despite consuming up to 40% less power at the same brightness levels. On top of that, tandem OLED panels are said to have a doubled lifespan, in part because each tandem layer needs to shine less brightly to produce the same full panel brightness. As a result, LG Display asserts that tandem OLED panels have a lower risk of burn-in than their conventional counterparts.

Moreover, LG Display reports that its 13-inch tandem OLED panels are 28% lighter and 40% percent thinner than competing OLED panels, even with a touchscreen layer included. LG Display adds that the panel outputs at 2,880 x 1,800 pixels too, while mastering the DCI-P3 colour space and achieving VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, rather than the more demanding DisplayHDR True Black 600 certification. Unfortunately, LG Display has not shared any details about the devices in which laptops its new 13-inch tandem OLED panel will be available.
