Julian Assange Receives Half a Million Dollars in Bitcoin from Anonymous Whale After Reaching a Plea Agreement

WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange has received a large Bitcoin donation from an anonymous “whale.” The donation consisted of eight Bitcoins, currently worth approximately $500,000, and was sent to a Bitcoin address belonging to a representative of Assange. During his latest court appearance in Saipan, Assange struck a plea deal that ended his 14-year legal troubles. Assange arrived in Australia after being released from U.S. custody under a plea deal. The plane carrying the 52-year-old landed in Canberra on Wednesday, shortly after he pleaded guilty in a Saipan court to one count of espionage. The judge's ruling allowed Assange to be acquitted, with Judge Manglona saying, "It appears that with this announcement he will be able to leave the court as a free man." Assange was extradited from the UK to Saipan once a plea deal was reached , he had to pay for his own private air ticket. However, he soon received over £300,000 in fiat currency donations and $500,000 in Bitcoin donations from an anonymous whale. Assange argued in court that the charges against him under the Espionage Act violated his First Amendment rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. He did acknowledge, however, that it could be illegal to pressure sources to reveal confidential material for publication. As part of his plea deal, Assange was required to delete material he provided to WikiLeaks.
