Republican House District 8 Nomination Decided by Coin Toss

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — After a tie for the Republican party nomination for Oregon House District 8 in the May primary, the overall winner was decided by coin toss late Thursday morning.
Secretary of State LaVonn Griffin-Valade announced Wednesday that, in keeping with Oregon law, when there is a tie in an election for state representative, officials with the Oregon Elections Division “decide by lot who is elected.”
Lisa Fragala – who won in the Democratic primary for District 8 – and Doyle E Canning – who lost to Fragala in the same primary – each received seven write-in votes for the Republican nomination, resulting in the tie.
Canning came out victorious in the coin toss. However, since she lost the Democratic primary for District 8, she is effectively barred from the Republican nomination, according to another Oregon law.
Additionally, if Fragala had won, she would have been on the November ballot as both the Democratic and the Republican nominee. But instead, she will now be the only candidate on the ballot for House District 8 altogether.
