TRMNL: Smart E Ink display comes with WiFi and very long battery life
Jun 29, 2024 am 12:21 AMSmart monitors are now available from various manufacturers, usually with strong smart home integration and the possibility of voice control. The TRMNL is one such device, which uses E Ink technology. This offers a number of advantages: readability is guaranteed in direct sunlight without the need for a backlight, and energy is only required when switching image content. The slow response time makes such monitors ideal for displaying image content that needs to be updated every second rather than every millisecond.
The 1,800 mAh battery of the TRMNL display is expected to last up to three months on average, allowing it to be mounted on a wall, for example, without a permanent power connection. Data is transmitted via WiFi, so no cable is required here either. According to the manufacturer, the display offers a wide range of options. Various apps can be installed, allowing completely different content to be displayed. The use of a calendar, an RSS feed or viewing the weather forecast are also conceivable. An API for the simple development of apps is apparently under development.
On Kickstarter, supporters can pre-order the 7.5-inch monitor for a contribution of $88. The device is due to be delivered in August as long as the crowdfunding campaign goes smoothly. Supporters are thus advised to be aware that such undertakings come with inherent financial risks.
