System76 unveils logo for upcoming Cosmic desktop, alpha release planned for end of July
The development of the Cosmic desktop by hardware manufacturer System76 is being followed with excitement by the Linux community. Using the modern Rust programming language, Cosmic combines the simplicity of a desktop environment with the efficiency of a tiling window manager. The unveiling of the official logo is another step on the way to the first alpha version of the Cosmic desktop.
"The open 'O' in the logo stands not only for a display, but also for an unwavering commitment to open source, an invitation to the community and the many possibilities for customisation. Underneath, the System76 blip in an orange-red gradient like a keyboard with custom LEDs shows what's possible with COSMIC," System76 describes the logo design in a recent blog post.
The American manufacturer of Linux laptops and desktops remains true to its philosophy of providing users and distribution developers with a flexible yet intuitive desktop environment. This is also reflected in the Cosmic Desktop slogan, which reads: "Realise visions, empower users". In addition, System76's upcoming desktop environment is designed to provide an appropriate user experience on any device with a display, not just laptops and desktops.
The Cosmic desktop environment is scheduled to receive its first official alpha release in late July, and interested users can add their email address to a mailing list to receive updates on the Cosmic desktop. In addition, the Cosmic Freedom Sale began on 26 June and runs until 9 July, offering discounts of up to $200 on selected computers and up to $50 on the manufacturer's keyboards.
