Steam Deck receives new features and bug fixes with new batch of beta updates

Earlier this week, Valve announced that it had finally enabled the ability to record Steam gameplay, which it has started rolling out as Game Recording BETA. Please see our dedicated article about the new functionality and the steps to enable it. Additionally, Valve has published various new updates for the Steam Deck (curr. $420 on Amazon), which it has also limited to its beta software distribution channel for the time being.

On the one hand, the company pushed SteamOS 3.6.7 to its Preview channel, one of the final development steps before an update reaches stable status. With that being said, SteamOS 3.6.7 makes few improvements, with a bug fix for washed-out colours 'when using Steam Remote Play as a client' listed in its changelog. Similarly, SteamOS 3.6.8 Beta, which is also available on the Steam Deck Preview channel, ships with a bug fix that caused an 'Update Error' prompt to show when clicking on the the 'Preview' update channel sub-menu.

On the other hand, Valve's recent Steam Deck Beta Client updates feature far more changes. Please note that Valve has flighted its June 26th and June 27th updates to both its Beta and Preview channels. However, there is no word yet on when these Beta Client updates will be rolled into a new stable Steam Deck Client update. At any rate, Valve has made the following changes with June 26th and June 27th Beta Client Updates:

General

  • Client and OS beta settings been updated to include a new "Preview" build of SteamOS when available for testing.
  • New Recording & Screenshot manager
  • Improved startup and library performance for users with large libraries.
  • Fixed collections based on friends not updating properly.
  • Fixed an issue preventing SteamOS from updating from version 3.6.7 when opted in to the 'Preview' update channel. (June 27th update)
  • Fixed errors while displaying certain collections for some users. (June 27th update)
  • Fixed mispositioned background glow on game capsules in grids. (June 27th update)
  • Fixed error when entering multiple words into search box. (June 27th update)

Desktop Mode

  • Fixed mispositioned background glow on hover in app grids.
  • Fixed trading card hover effect
  • Fixed "Soundtracks" and "All Games" shelves on home page applying the app type filter from the top of the games list. This would lead to Soundtracks showing no items if Soundtracks was not selected at the top of the games list, as an example. (June 27th update)

Game Recording

  • Fixed incorrect formatting on clip cancel button in some languages.
  • Fixed spurious game recording toggle and timeline marker shortcut keys being processed in some directinput8 games.
  • Fixed recording of microphone.
  • Fixed NaN showing in media manager confirmation dialog when deleting local screenshot.
  • Fixed media manager delete button tooltip.
  • Fixed Recording and screenshots context menu opening in its own window.
  • Fixed default clip file name not being set in overlay file dialog.
  • Improved display recording UI when at smaller sizes.
  • Fixed deleting screenshots sometimes not immediately updating the Recordings and Screenshots grid.
  • Fixed multi-select screenshot upload from the Recordings and Screenshots grids sometimes showing an error after the upload completed.
  • Added support for non-latin character file paths for the game recording folder and exported clips locations.
  • If recording is disabled, display in the overlay a button explaining it is disabled with a link to enable it, rather than a nonfunctional recording toggle button.
  • (Linux) Fixed export clip dialog not allowing saving.
