Supersega FPGA system aims to hardware emulate half a dozen SEGA systems including SEGA Saturn and SEGA Dreamcast

The use of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chips to hardware emulate games has become increasingly popular in recent years. Principally, developers have focused on leveraging FPGA chips for systems released throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Nintendo's vast Game Boy library. Arguably, the FPGA gaming scene has been popularised by Analogue with its Pocket gaming handheld (curr. $389.99 on Amazon), which can play Atari Lynx, Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket Color systems, not just titles from Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance libraries.

The FPGA scene now has other Game Boy-focused options from Funnyplaying, Sipeed and even the founder of Oculus VR, though, details of which we have covered through each appropriate hyperlink. With that being said, there are few FPGA-based home console solutions, other than Analogue's Duo, Mega Sg and Super Nt systems, as well as the forthcoming '3D' for Nintendo 64 games. Allegedly, there is a SEGA-based equivalent in the works though, from a team of developers working under the banned 'SuperSega' or 'Supersega'.

Mirroring the Analogue Pocket somewhat, the Supersega is said to have been designed to hardware emulate multiple systems. Specifically, the developers behind the project hope to create a device that can play SC-3000, SG-1000, Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis cartridges. Moreover, there is even a CD/DVD drive for playing Dreamcast and Saturn games. Reportedly, the Supersega will rely on a Virtex Ultrascale+ FPGA chip, which will be complemented by an SD card reader, plus Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Ultimately, we would recommend taking this project with a healthy amount of scepticism until the Supersega team publishes more substantial details about its device.
