Latvian poet, writer and translator Vilis Lejnieks (1874–1940), better known by his pen name Vilis Plūdons, adopted the pseudonym Plūdons at the beginning of his literary career, which he later formalized as his surname. Plūdons, born in Zemgale, spent his childhood and summers near the Mēmele River and the surrounding forests. The fields of Zemgale held a special place in his heart, inspiring many of his poems.
