DJI e-bike teaser tips motor with new custom full-suspension eMTB for July 3 launch as US drone ban looms

The electric mountain bike space has mostly been dominated by established players, like Bosch and Shimano, but a recent post by DJI hints that the Chinese drone maker will soon also break into the e-bike game.

The DJI e-bike motor teaser, recently posted to the company's official X page, shows off a mid-drive e-bike motor mounted to the bottom bracket of what looks to be a full-suspension electric mountain bike.

The full nature of the eMTB playing host to DJI's new mid-drive motor is unclear, but a quick glance at an accompanying post on DJI's Instagram account reveals a partnership with a new account called Amflow, suggesting DJI is starting a new sub-brand for its eMTB endeavours.

Amflow's posts on Instagram all have a caption referring to “your riding routine” indicating that there is also perhaps an urban commuter e-bike in the works.

"We're flipping the switch on your riding routine. Join us at EUROBIKE 2024 from July 3-7 in Frankfurt, Germany"

DJI's caption along with the teaser reads “Power Your Ride,” and tips a launch date of July 3 at 9 AM CEST, indicating that the new e-bike will launch in time for Eurobike 2024, which is slated to run from July 3 to July 7 in Frankfurt, Germany.

A DJI e-bike seems counterintuitive, but it makes sense when you consider the context. DJI already has plenty of experience designing brushless electric motors and the controllers and accompanying hardware and software. Additionally, the looming ban on Chinese-made drones in the US has likely been a concerning development for the drone maker, so getting into other product categories makes sense. Many mountain bikers are also already familiar with the brand from the likes of the DJI Osmo Action 4 (curr. $299 on Amazon), giving DJI a head start when it comes to building a customer base.
