Pluto TV, the free, ad-supported streaming service, plans to remove 90 movies from its On Demand lineup after July 31, 2024. Here are six films you should watch before they leave, in my humble opinion:
1.Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
This sexy psychological drama from director Stanley Kubrick stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a glamorous couple trying to preserve their marriage amid temptation and deceit. (No, it’s fiction.) The movie, the great Kubrick’s last, delves into the mysterious and secretive world of masked orgies and hidden desires.
2.The Ring (2002)
The 2002 horror film directed by Gore Verbinski stars Naomi Watts as a Seattle newspaper reporter who investigates why several teenagers have died after watching a videotape. (Another good reason why videotape was replaced by discs and streaming.) The Ring is a truly scary film and Watts is perfect in the damsel in distress role when she gets a little too close to the secret behind the deaths.
3.No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Coen Brothers’ flawless neo-western stars Josh Brolin as a good old boy who stumbles upon a jackpot of money but is then pursued by a ruthless, coin-flipping killer, played deliciously by Javier Bardem. (And let’s not overlook the commanding performance of Tommy Lee Jones as the weather-beaten sheriff.) Joel and Ethan Coen have conspired to make cinema brilliance over the years with films such as Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and Miller’s Crossing. But there may be no better Coen Brothers film than No Country for Old Men. If you haven’t seen it, start streaming.
4.Devil In a Blue Dress (1995)
Based on the Walter Mosley novel, Denzel Washington is as cool as the other side of the pillow playing Easy Rawlins, a down-on-his-luck detective who’s hired to find a missing woman (Jennifer Beals). The neo-noir takes a predictable path but Denzel’s performance is so dynamic that you’re happy to follow along with every step. Don Cheadle is also outstanding in a pre-Boogie Nights role as Easy’s buddy, Mouse, a man with a fast trigger-finger.
5.Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s intense 2012 drama stars Jessica Chastain as a relentless CIA agent who hunts for the masterminds behind the 9/11 attack on America. The film was seen by some as glorifying the extralegal tactics required to obtain leads in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. But it fairly characterizes the pain and zeal felt by the intelligence/military personnel at the time. And Chastain is riveting as a CIA case officer who can’t sit still (literally) until she finds her man.
6.Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan stars Tom Hanks as the captain of a World War II unit which must find a single soldier (Matt Damon) while navigating the horrors of war. There’s never been a better film on the sacrifice and unselfishness of America’s military and Hanks is especially good in lead. And the first 15 minutes, which depicts the D-Day invasion, immerses the viewer in battle unlike any scene before or since.
Honorable mentions to Zodiac, Cliffhanger, He Got Game, Primal Fear, Gladiator and Boyz n the Hood.
