Worldcoin, a blockchain startup that aims to onboard one billion people with its iris-scanning orbs, is falling short of its goal.

Announced in July 2023, Worldcoin aimed to onboard one billion users by the end of 2023. However, as of July 10th, 2024, Worldcoin has only verified 6 million users.

According to an earlier report by several outlets in October 2021, Worldcoin aimed to hit one billion users by the end of 2023. It is now July 2024.

According to a report by Semafor in April, Worldcoin is facing an orb shortage, with an estimated 300-500 orbs in use.

At an average scanning rate of 20 people per hour, Worldcoin would need to scan the eyes of 2,740 people per day to reach one billion users in two years. Taking into account the already onboarded 6 million users, 500 orbs would need to scan 2,734 people per day.

According to Worldcoin, it has already produced 2,000 orbs. At this rate, each orb would need to scan roughly 700 people per day in order to reach one billion in two years.

Worldcoin extends grants amid global restrictions

On Monday, Worldcoin also extended its WLD token grant reservation program for an additional year. Initially, users without a verified World ID had until July 2024 to reserve tokens that could be redeemed later.

Worldcoin is still unavailable to users in the US, China, India, and the UK. As regions began restricting the orbs and launching investigations, Worldcoin encountered difficulties onboarding users globally.

While operations have resumed in Kenya and South Korea after previous orb investigations were dropped, Worldcoin is still available in Germany, where the orbs are reportedly produced in a single factory.
