At the close of trading on Monday, U.S. stocks were in positive territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.5%, reaching 40,211.72.
U.S. stock indexes rose on Monday, boosted by gains in Tesla and Coinbase, as traders assessed the latest batch of corporate earnings and awaited key inflation data later this week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 211.72 points, or 0.53%, to 40,211.72. The S&P 500 rose 19.8 points, or 0.35%, to 5,631.22, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 72.57 points, or 0.39%, to 18,472.57.
Among the best performing S&P 500 stocks were Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), which rose nearly 2% to close at $252.64, and Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN), which surged over 11% to end the day at $242.85.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reportedly committed to contributing $45 million per month to a new super PAC backing former President Trump’s potential 2024 presidential campaign.
Coinbase’s stock price rose sharply amid a broader recovery in cryptocurrency prices. Bitcoin was trading above $63,000 during the session.
Also rising were Marathon Digital (NASDAQ:MARA) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). Shares of Marathon Digital rose nearly 18% to close at $24.58, while Apple stock added over 1% to end the day at $234.4.
On the downside, Trump Media & Technology (NASDAQ:DJT) stock pulled back in the after-hours session after a strong rally during the regular trading day. Shares of the company, which is associated with former President Donald Trump, rose over 31% to close at $40.58.
The stock hit an intraday high of $46.27 and a low of $38.06. The 52-week range for the stock is $79.38 to $22.55.
Trump Media filed a prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission late Friday for the resale of nearly 38 million shares of common stock.
Among the worst performing S&P 500 stocks were Cigna (NYSE:CI), Travelers (NYSE:TRV) and Walgreens (NASDAQ:WBA). Shares of Cigna fell nearly 2% to close at $260.04, while Travelers stock declined over 1% to end the day at $170.04. Walgreens stock also slipped nearly 1% to close at $54.08.
