Polygon Unveils Plonky3, the Next-Generation ZK Proving System, Ready for Production Use

Polygon has announced the launch of its new zero-knowledge (ZK) proving system, Plonky3, which is now ready for use by developers. The open-source software has been audited and deemed secure for integration.

“Today, researchers at Polygon Labs are excited to announce that Polygon Plonky3, the next generation of ZK proving systems, is production ready and open-source licensed under MIT/Apache,” the company stated in its announcement.

Plonky3 is a proving mechanism that enables blockchains and applications built on ZK technology to prove transactions and states using efficient cryptography. Polygon’s efforts in scaling the Ethereum ecosystem have been largely driven by ZK technology, with its layer 2 rollup chain, Polygon zkEVM, offering high throughput and low gas fees for developers and end-users to leverage.

Crucially, Plonky3 introduces a modular approach to constructing scalable blockchain infrastructure, which is designed to be easily integrated by developers into their applications.

“One effect of this modularity is more innovation. Polygon Plonky3 has already been adopted by projects like Valida and Succinct Labs’ SP1,” Polygon explained. “Indirectly, that means every subsequent project that builds with these zkVMs is building on Plonky3, too.”

Furthermore, Plonky3 provides developers with the ability to choose between optimizing for computation speeds or proof sizes, enabling them to tailor applications to provide high scalability based on these parameters. “A developer that requires speed would configure Polygon Plonky3 completely differently than a developer that requires the smallest proof size,” said Polygon.

This upgrade from the previously launched Plonky2 is attributed to its modularity, which allows developers to configure the proving mechanism to their builds. While Plonky2 was a game changer in its own right, it was less flexible.

“Whereas Plonky2 was a single proving system focused on lightning-fast recursion by optimizing for hardware, Polygon Plonky3 is an open source toolkit that empowers ZK developers to build their own zkVMs or zkEVMs.”

This launch underscores Polygon’s commitment to introducing innovative ZK products into the decentralized space, enabling developers to leverage these implementations and build the next generation of dApps together with Polygon. “Polygon Plonky3 is a continuation of Polygon Labs’ broader commitment to open-source ZK-powered technology as the only way to achieve verifiable off-chain computation.”
