Bitcoin enthusiasts Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss are donating $1 million in the cryptocurrency to the U.S. Senate campaign of John Deaton, who hopes to unseat Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

Deaton, an attorney, has represented XRP holders in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s case against Ripple Labs over whether XRP is an unregistered security. He is also running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

Both brothers announced their donations in separate posts on X, a new social media platform from former Y Combinator President Sam Altman.

"John Deaton is running for pro-bitcoin, pro-crypto Massachusetts U.S. Senate," Cameron Winklevoss wrote in his post. "Let's help him win."

Tyler Winklevoss wrote in his post that Deaton is "crypto's public enemy number one," referring to Warren. "She's the chief architect and driver of the Biden Administration's war on crypto," he added.

Deaton, who announced his Senate campaign in October, has said he accepts crypto donations on his official website. Earlier this week, Ripple Labs donated $1 million to a new super political action committee (super PAC) created to help Deaton beat Warren in the upcoming election.

Deaton is running against several other Democratic candidates, including Boston University professor and activist Tanisha Sullivan, state Sen. Adam Hinds and Lawrence Mayor Kendrys Vasquez. The primary election is scheduled for Sept. 19, 2024.

Warren, who is seeking a fourth Senate term, has been a vocal critic of cryptocurrencies and Web3 technologies, calling for stricter regulations on the industry. Last year, she introduced the Digital Asset Securities Act of 2023, a bill that would classify most digital assets as securities.

Last month, the Winklevoss twins also endorsed former President Donald Trump and donated a total of $2 million to the Republican nominee for president. The Gemini co-founders have also donated $250,000 each to a pro-Trump super PAC.

In recent months, Trump has managed to position himself as the pro-crypto presidential candidate despite in the past denigrating digital assets.
