Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX has filed a police complaint and is taking further legal actions after a cyberattack led to a loss of over $230 million. The exchange is collaborating with global partners and authorities to trace and recover the stolen funds.

Prominent Indian crypto exchange WazirX provided an update on Friday concerning the security breach disclosed on Thursday. The exchange said it has filed a police complaint and is taking further legal actions after a cyberattack in which over $230 million was stolen.

“We have reported the incident to the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and CERT-In,” WazirX noted on social media platform X. “We’re reaching out to 500+ exchanges to block the identified addresses.”

“Many exchanges are cooperating with us, and we are actively working with them on additional resources to aid our recovery efforts,” the exchange continued. “Our immediate plans include tracing the stolen funds, recovering customer assets, and conducting a deeper analysis of the cyber attack. We are collaborating with forensic experts and law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.”

Liminal Custody, which provides security solutions for digital assets, also issued a statement on Thursday regarding the WazirX situation. Earlier, WazirX alleged that the hacked wallet “was operated utilizing the services of Liminal’s digital asset custody and wallet infrastructure.” According to the exchange, “the cyber attack stemmed from a discrepancy between the data displayed on Liminal’s interface and the transaction’s actual contents.”

However, Liminal shared on X: “Our preliminary investigations show that one of the self custody multi-sig smart contract wallets created outside of the Liminal ecosystem has been compromised. We can confirm that Liminal’s platform is not breached and Liminal’s infrastructure, wallets and assets continue to remain safe.” The company emphasized:

It is also pertinent to note that all Wazirx wallets created on the Liminal platform continue to remain secure and protected.

“Meanwhile, all the malicious transactions to the attacker’s addresses have occurred from outside of the Liminal platform,” the statement concludes. “Adhering to our rigorous security protocols, the Liminal team is also readily assisting the Wazirx team as they carry out their investigation.”
