Teach you how to add fonts to Fedora in 5 minutes
If you install the font system-wide, then it will be available to all users. The best way to do this is to use RPM packages from the official software repositories.
Before starting, open the “Software” tool in Fedora Workstation, or other tools using the official repository. Select the “Add-ons” category in the selection bar. Then select “Fonts” in the category. You’ll see the available fonts similar to the ones in the screenshot below:
When you select a font, some details appear. Depending on several scenarios, you may be able to preview some sample text for the font. Click the “Install” button to add it to your system. Depending on system speed and network bandwidth, this process may take some time to complete.
You can also delete installed fonts with a check mark in front of them through the "Remove" button in the font details.
This method works better if you downloaded the font in a compatible format: .ttf, otf, .ttc, .pfa, .pfb or .pcf. These font extensions should not be installed system-wide by placing them into system folders. Unpackaged fonts of this type cannot be updated automatically. They may also interfere with some software operations later. The best way to install these fonts is in your own personal data directory.
Open the “Files” app in Fedora Workstation or a similar file manager app of your choice. If you use "Files", you may need to use the Ctrl+H key combination to show hidden files and folders. Find the .fonts folder and open it. If you don't have a .fonts folder, create it. (Remember the first dot and use all lowercase.)
Copy the downloaded font files to the .fonts folder. You can close the file manager at this point. Open a terminal and enter the following command:
- fc-cache
This will rebuild the font cache, helping Fedora find and reference it. You may also need to restart applications that require the new fonts, such as Inkscape or LibreOffice. After you reboot, the new font should be available.
