Cybertruck: Tesla confirms upcoming range extender requires professional installation

Tesla’s upcoming range extender for the Cybertruck is poised to significantly increase the vehicle's driving distance per charge. This auxiliary battery pack that will occupy approximately one-third of the vehicle’s bed promises to extend the range of dual-motor Cybertrucks from 340 to over 470 miles (547 → 756 km). For the tri-motor Cyberbeast model, it's 320 to over 440 miles (515 → 708 km).

Initially, it was anticipated that this battery pack would be a user-installable accessory, easy to put into place or remove as needed. However, according to Tesla the range extender will require professional installation by Tesla-certified technicians. This decision, as outlined by lead Cybertruck engineer Wes Morrill, is primarily driven by safety concerns. Given that the range extender will substantially enhance the vehicle’s range, it is also likely to add significant weight. Therefore, securely installing the battery pack is crucial to ensure the vehicle's stability in all driving conditions, including potential accidents.

While the range extender offers a compelling proposition for those seeking to maximize their Cybertruck’s range, it is not free of drawbacks. The additional battery pack inevitably reduces cargo capacity.

As of now, Tesla has not officially disclosed the product's availability or pricing, though it is expected to cost around $16,000 when it finally launches. This hard-to-swallow figure, coupled with the loss of bed space, has elicited mixed reactions from the existing owners and potential buyers.
