A TikTok user has highlighted the importance of checking your coin collection after revealing a 1933 coin recently fetched an eye-watering £140,000 at auction.

In a video to his 172,700 followers, @CoinCollectingWizard posted footage of an individual showcasing the coin.

He began with: "This is my private collection one that's been loaned to as very kindly. It's great because it's such an iconic coin we get lots of visitors coming to see it.

"Usually these coins disappear into safes and never seen again. The last sold in 2016 for a hammer price of around £140,000. Its first ones had sold for many many years and one would imagine if it would come on the market again it would sell for even higher."

Although the coin can sell for a fortune, there is one little catch - there aren't many of these in the UK.

The TikTok user continued: "This is the 1933 predecimal penny from the UK, so make sure you check your grandad's old coin collection and keep an eye out for this date.

"Now obviously I don't have the coin, this is a fake copy version. Do you have this coin from 1933? If so you are rich, there are other dates to look out for too, but it's never going to be the crazy value of the 1933 penny as seven are known to exist.

"So if you find one, you are extremely lucky."

The post showcasing the much sought-after "The holy grail 1933 predecimal penny" was a hit online, garnering over 1,120 likes and sparking a flurry of comments.

One person said: "We had one about 10 years ago but it went missing."
