News from this site on August 2, according to a report released by SMG (Silicon Manufacturers Group), a subsidiary of SEMI, global silicon wafer shipments reached 3.035 billion square inches in the second quarter of 2024 (Note from this site: Approximately 1.958 million square meters). Compared with 2.834 billion square inches in the first quarter of 2024, global silicon wafer shipment area increased by 7% sequentially in the last quarter, ending three consecutive quarters of decline that began in the third quarter of 2023. However, the 3.035 billion square inches figure is still down 8.9% from the 3.331 billion square inches in the same period in 2023.

The silicon wafer market is recovering, driven by strong demand for data centers and generative artificial intelligence products.
The recovery was uneven across different applications, but 300mm (12-inch) wafer shipments grew 8% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter, the best performance.
More semiconductor fabs are being built or expanded. This move and the long-term trend of entering the US$1 trillion semiconductor market are bound to increase the demand for silicon wafers.
