New updates rolling out to Google Pixel smartphones and smartwatches running Android 14
Google will launch a slew of new Pixel devices next week, having already introduced its Chromecast replacement and a new Nest Learning Thermostat yesterday. For now, the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL are expected to arrive alongside a smaller Pixel 9 Pro, as well as a successor to last year's Pixel Fold called the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Moreover, Google's August 13 event should be the first official time that a new pair of Pixel Buds Pro earbuds are shown, as well as two Pixel Watch 2 (curr. $329.99 on Amazon) successors.
In the meantime, Google has now published new updates for its existing Pixel product stack, including the Pixel Tablet, Pixel Watch andPixel Watch 2. Given how close we are to the first stable releases of Android 15 and Google's version of Wear OS 5, it should come as no surprise to learn that this month's round of stable updates focuses on improving the security of current Pixel devices.
Specifically, Google has bumped the likes of thePixel 8andPixel 8 Proup to its August 2024 of security patches, which it distributes as 2024-08-01 and 2024-08-05 in one collective package. As the likes of9to5Google note, the latest round of security patches addresses a total of 46 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) all ranging from high to critical. Please note that while Google does not list these in its per-device changelog, it has documented them in its latest Pixel Update Bulletin.
Conversely, Google's August update for the Pixel Watch andPixel Watch 2should bring the pair onto the same security patch. However,9to5Google reportsotherwise, claiming that its device remains on the July 2024 security patch even after updating. Unfortunately, Google has not provided any further details at this stage, nor whether is an isolated incident.
