50p coin sells for £131 after sparking eBay bidding war
It could be well worth checking your change
A 50p coin has sold for more than 260 times its face value after sparking a 23-way bidding war on eBay.
The coin in question is a collectable Kew Gardens 50p, though there are many more out there. Many coins are sought out by collectors, and this particular one is estimated by experts to be worth around £140.
While it had an original starting price of just 99p, this jumped up and up as bids came in quickly, with a final sale price of £131, plus £3 for postage and packaging.
The Kew Gardens 50p coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and the Royal Mint estimate around 210,000 were made.
It features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the late Queen's face on the other.
The "Coin Circulated 2009 Kew Gardens Elizabeth II Genuine Original RARE AUCTION" listing on eBay was bid on some 23 times. Another Kew Gardens 50p also sold for £134 on the online auction site.
It could be well worth checking your change for a Kew Gardens 50p as you could be in for an exciting payday. If you do find one, the first thing you should do is check the date on it.
This is because the Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p and this version doesn't tend to sell for as much. That said, these ones have been known to sell for around £70 or £80 on eBay.

According to one expert, the 2011 piece was minted to celebrate the London Olympics in 2012

The ancient coin is from 1902 and features King Edward VII on the front. The reverse features a design of a seated Britannia, a female figure which appeared on British coins for centuries.

Minted in 2009 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Kew Gardens, the coin bears the image of the iconic Great Pagoda.

The first coins with King Charles' official portrait on began entering circulation in the UK back in December 2022.

The 50 pence piece has become the most valued and collected coin in the UK, with many collectable designs appearing on its heptagonal canvas.

Carrying spare change in your pocket for many may be considered a tad old-fashioned, but you could potentially be holding onto something quite valuable.

Its 27.5mm diameter makes it the largest of any British coin, and allows space for decorative pictures. It has often been used to celebrate big events over the past 50 years of British history.

The seller said the Atlantic salmon 50p coin is “very rare to find” but there is a chance you’ll come across this coin in your spare change.
