【ITBEAR】According to news on August 10, today, the China Ocean Affairs Administration of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the National Deep Sea Base Management Center jointly announced that the 2024 Western Pacific International Voyage Scientific Expedition Team will officially set sail from Qingdao, Shandong Province. A highlight of this scientific expedition mission is that the "Deep Sea No. 1" ship will carry the "Jiaolong" manned submersible to jointly launch a 45-day maritime scientific investigation.

"Deep Sea No. 1" is the first mother ship in China specially designed to provide support tasks for manned submersibles. It was carefully designed by the 708th Research Institute of CSSC. The ship is 90.2 meters long, 16.8 meters wide, with a design displacement of 4,500 tons and a powerful endurance of more than 12,000 nautical miles. According to ITBEAR, the combination of "Deep Sea No. 1" and "Jiaolong" will play a key role in this voyage.

Seamounts, as unique ecosystems and environments in the deep sea, hide countless mysteries of deep sea life. In this scientific expedition, the "Jiaolong" plans to conduct 18 dives in three specific operating areas in the Western Pacific, aiming to conduct an in-depth investigation of the biological groups of seamounts and accurately grasp the location, environmental characteristics and composition of the biological communities of seamounts.

It is worth mentioning that as the first international voyage under the "Digital Deep Sea Typical Habitat" large-scale science plan, the "Jiaolong" will carry scientists from overseas for the first time to dive together.
