Day / Days of Code: Reflecting on My Journey to Becoming a Developer

Tue, August 13, 2024

Today marks a major milestone in my coding journey: I've reached JavaScript in my studies, and it feels like the right moment to reflect on the path that led me here.

Despite having the most tenure in my office and training my support team, my aspiration to become a software developer was well-known. However, balancing a full-time support role with learning to code proved challenging. When an unexpected layoff occurred, I chose to view it as an opportunity rather than a setback.

Realizing that my previous code camp wasn't aligning with my goals, I took a step back to reassess. I researched options, compared paths forward, and made a decision to start anew. This week, I've been initiated into JavaScript through Codecademy, and it's been a blast! The structured learning approach and hands-on projects have accelerated my growth.

I'm fortunate to have retained a career mentor who has been invaluable throughout this transition. His guidance has been a source of strength.

Today, I updated my LinkedIn profile to reflect my new journey. It's a small step, but it represents a significant shift. Every career change brings challenges, but also opportunities for growth. I'm grateful for the chance to pursue coding full-time and excited about the road ahead. In the words of my career coach: "Every job is temporary, and we're a company of one." Here's to embracing change and continuous learning!

Wishing my former colleagues all the best.
