Garmin releases new bug squashing update for popular mid-range smartwatch
The Forerunner 255 is eligible for another new beta update, a week or so after Garmin released Beta Version 20.21 to the ageing smartwatch. According to the company's associated forum post, roughly 50% of Forerunner 255 smartwatches have been offered Beta Version 20.23 so far. However, it should be possible to trigger the update manually by heading to the main menu on a Forerunner 255, followed by Settings, System and Software Update before tapping 'Check for Updates'.
Supposedly, Beta Version 20.23 has caused excessive battery drain on some Forerunner 255 (curr. $289 on Amazon) smartwatches. However, others report that this bug was already present in Beta Version 20.21 and has been carried across to Beta Version 20.23. Unfortunately, it seems that Garmin has not acknowledged this issue at present.
At any rate, Beta Version 20.23 is said to contain 18 changes from earlier beta updates. While Garmin has primarily focused on addressing outstanding bugs, there are a few new features and improvements to speak of, such as a refinement of how the Forerunner 255 will predict race times based on fitness levels and recent efforts. For reference, Garmin claims that Beta Version 20.23 ships with the following changes:
- Adds Garmin Share, share your workouts, courses, and waypoints between compatible Garmin devices.
- Added Device Settings Backup and Restore.
- Improvements to support pool swim workouts with pace alerts and critical swim speed.
- Improvements to the pool swim rest screen and alert tones.
- Improvements to race time predictions based on fitness level and recent efforts.
- Integrates the Garmin Run Coach feature into Garmin Connect app.
- Fixed lock screen vibration during sleep mode.
- Fixed map data field text truncation.
- Fixed edge case weather data display errors.
- Fixed calendar display issues.
- Fixed pool size selection in Garmin Connect real time settings.
- Fixed alert suppression during breathwork activity.
- Fixed various language translation errors.
- Fixed various bugs and UI improvements.
- Fixed crash that could occur during activities.
- Fixed crash that could occur on notification glance.
- Fixed workouts missing from some activity profiles.
- Fixed haptic feedback on some watch face data fields.
