According to a new report in South Korea, Apple plans to use new low-energy OLED panel technology in the next generation Apple Watch to further reduce the power consumption of its all-weather display.

1. Apple plans to use new low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin film transistor (TFT) technology in the Apple Watch that will be released in the second half of this year.
  1. LTPO TFT is a method of applying an oxide on the driver TFT and switching transistor behind each pixel. Switching transistors control the voltage applied to the liquid crystal cells, allowing precise control of the amount of light passing through each pixel.
  2. Current Apple Watch OLED screens use LTPO TFTs in only a handful of switching transistors, with most transistors and the TFTs that drive them relying on low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) technology.
  3. Using oxide instead of LTPS to drive the TFT and more switching transistors means that only the oxide is responsible for the current flow through most of the transistors connected directly to the OLED pixels. In new LTPO OLED applications, increased oxide usage means lower leakage current and more stable low refresh rate operation, resulting in overall energy savings.
  4. LG Display is expected to be the first to develop new LTPO OLED technology. Samsung, meanwhile, is involved in a development project to join Apple's LTPO OLED supply chain ahead of next year's Apple Watch.
