Zen 5 falls flat: Ryzen 9000 prices reportedly crash in Germany within weeks of official launch

AMD officially kicked off its latest generation of client CPUs with the launch of the Ryzen 5 9600X and the Ryzen 7 9700X on August 8th in Europe at RRPs of €309 and €399 respectively. The Ryzen 9 9900X and the Ryzen 9 9950X were released a week later with much higher prices of €539 and €709 respectively.

Surprisingly, it now seems that the Zen 5 prices are already sliding down less than a month after the official release. According to a report by PCGamesHardware (PCGH), street pricing of the new Ryzen 9000 processors is down anywhere from 4.53 to 11.87%.

Talking about individual CPUs, the Ryzen 5 9600X price is now reportedly 4.53% less than the launch price of €309 and the chip has a current street price of €295. Similarly, the street prices of the Ryzen 7 9700X and the Ryzen 9 9950X are also down to €373 and €675 or 6.52% and 4.8% lower than RRP respectively. The biggest price drop has been seen by the Ryzen 9 9900X which is going for around €475 in the German market.

Zen 5 CPUs failed to generate a strong response from the fans

We previously reported that the launch week sales of the Ryzen 5 9600X in Germany were nothing to write home about. Per a new analysis by TechEpiphany, the Ryzen 9 9950X and the Ryzen 9 9900X have also seen a weak reception. Mindfactory reportedly managed to move only 50 and 10 units of the Ryzen 9 9950X and the Ryzen 9 9900X respectively in week 33 of 2024.

Pricing of PC hardware, like virtually all other products, is subject to the effects of supply and demand. Naturally, when there is no demand for a product, the price of that product is bound to come down and vice versa. So, it is not hard to see why the Zen 5 chips are becoming cheaper.

Finally, while the price drops will certainly enhance the value proposition of Zen 5 CPUs, folks who want to get the most bang for their buck will still be better served by the Ryzen 7000 processors. For instance, buyers in the US can get the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, arguably the best gaming CPU on the market, for $308 on Amazon at the time of writing. AMD currently can’t beat this type of value with their Ryzen 9000 chips.
