Polygon Discord Channel Hacked, Raising Concerns About Security Measures

Blockchain platform Polygon has found itself in the crosshairs of cybercriminals, as the company's Discord channel was hacked, leading to a flurry of concerns

Blockchain platform Polygon’s Discord channel was hacked on August 24, leading to concerns about the platform’s security measures.

The breach was announced by Polygon’s Chief Information Security Officer, Mudit Gupta, who advised users to be cautious and avoid clicking on any links in the Discord channel until the situation was resolved.

However, Gupta later revealed that all privileged accounts on the platform had two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the security measures in place.

The breach had immediate repercussions within the Polygon community. Several users took to X to report the incident and warn others about the scam links being posted in the announcements channel.

One user, shadabk2005, reported the breach and the presence of scam links on X.

In a more severe development, another user, ValidatorK, reported losing $150,000 worth of Ether from his pool following an interaction with what appeared to be an official announcement on Polygon’s Discord channel.

The Polygon team eventually regained control of the Discord channel at around 10:43 AM UTC, roughly three hours after the breach. Gupta announced the recovery and stated that the team was "cleaning up all the changes made by the hacker to make sure they can't come back."

The attack on Polygon’s Discord channel is not an isolated incident within the crypto community. Several high-profile breaches have occurred recently.

On March 25, blockchain security firm CertiK highlighted a phishing scam that targeted the Arbitrum Discord server, where suspicious links were sent out, reportedly via a compromised dev account.

Similarly, on May 5, the Gnus.AI artificial intelligence network fell victim to a Discord-related exploit, leading to a loss of around $1.27 million.

The timing of the breach is particularly concerning for Polygon, which is currently preparing for a major network upgrade.

As part of the upgrade, scheduled for September 4, the platform will be replacing its native Polygon (MATIC) token with POL tokens.
