Meta reportedly abandons its plans for Apple Vision Pro competitor

Apple Vision Pro hit the shelves in February, and it's the first product of a new category from the Cupertino giant since the release of the Apple Watch in 2015. While the XR headset packs the same level of power as a 2022 M2-powered MacBook Air (8/256 GB curr. $779 on Amazon), the entry-level model with 256 GB RAM costs $3,499.

Meta, which made its first big step into virtual reality in 2014, was allegedly working to introduce an Apple Vision Pro competitor. Per reports, the plan was to keep the headset's price under $1,000, which would've made Meta's XR headset offer more value than Apple's.

However, according to a new report from The Information, Meta has canceled its plans. The report suggests that the decision came after a product review meeting, and Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of the company, has reportedly told the employees to abandon all work.

This decision to abandon the XR headset is said to be due to the inability to keep the price down. For reference, Apple Vision Pro is the first mass-produced product to feature micro-OLED, and these displays cost a lot. If Meta wants to bring out a competitor with the same panels, it would be very challenging to meet the target of less than $1,000.

Another aspect that has likely played a role in Meta's decision is the fact that the Vision Pro isn't doing well, and if Apple can't make a high-price device sell well, it may just indicate that there's not enough marketfor these super premium devices.

While Meta may have canceled its Apple Vision Pro competitor, the CTO, Andrew Bosworth, said that the company has "many prototypes in development at all times." Previous reports have also indicated that there will be a new Quest VR headset with the codename Ventura. It could launch at the end of this year.
