Powkiddy X35S: Anbernic rival releases new vertical retro gaming handheld with copycat design and external monitor support

Powkiddy has introduced another retro gaming handheld, only a few weeks after early information about the RGB10 Max 4 came to light. While that particular model is not official yet, Powkiddy has started selling the X35S globally. Specifically, the Powkiddy X35S is available through the company's website and its AliExpress store in the following colour options:

  • Black transparent (translucent finish)
  • Purple transparent (translucent finish)
  • Grey (solid finish)
  • Orange (solid finish)
  • White (solid finish)

Additionally, Powkiddy has decided to sell the handheld with a 16 GB MicroSD card and a choice between 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB secondary MicroSD cards on which to store ROM files. As the images below show, these files will be rendered on a 3.5-inch display that Powkiddy relies on IPS panel technology with full OCA lamination and that outputs at 640 x 480 pixels. Moreover, the company has paired this display with a pair of joysticks , four shoulder buttons, ABXY buttons and a moderately-sized d-pad.

Ultimately, the X35S looks a lot like the RGB20S, one of Powkiddy's other gaming handhelds. However, it relies upon Rockchip's more powerful RK3566 chipset, which also powers this year's RGB10 Max 3 (curr. $89.99 on Amazon). As such, Powkiddy advertises the X35S as being capable of emulating systems like the Nintendo 64, PlayStation 1 and the PlayStation Portable, although the emulation experience will likely vary between games. On top of that, the X35S finds itself with a 3,000 mAh battery, a Bluetooth modem for external controller support and an HDMI port for connecting to a TV or monitor. Currently, Powkiddy charges the following amounts for its latest retro gaming handheld via its online store with no surcharges applied for colour variants:

  • 16 GB + 32 GB MicroSD cards: $59.99
  • 16 GB + 64 GB MicroSD cards: $64.99
  • 16 GB + 128 GB MicroSD cards: $74.99
