Lossless Scaling on Steam Deck OLED runs games at up to 2x FPS

ETA Prime recently showcased a paid software called Lossless Scaling on ROG Ally X. While it doesn't actually improve the actual gaming performance, the software enhances the experience by adding frame generation and resolution scaling. These two can mean a lot for low-end systems such as gaming handhelds.

However, there are some requirements, one of which is that the software only works on Windows. Valve's handhelds, on the other hand, ships with SteamOS, a Linux distro. The good part is Valve has recently added official Windows driver support for the Steam Deck OLED, making the gaming handheld work well with Microsoft's operating system. Windows drivers for the non-OLED variant are also available.

As for how much Lossless Scaling can help on Steam Deck OLED, ETA Prime has just tested it, and the results are good. The YouTuber first tested out Cyberpunk 2077with low visual settings and a resolution of 1280x720. Without the software turned on, the average FPS was around 51 FPS.

With LS1 scaling turned on and LSFG 2.3 frame generation selected on Lossless Scaling, the FPS jumps to over 80. ETA Prime tested out Hogwarts Legacynext, and while the native FPS was around 34, it jumped to about 62 with the scaling turned on. The game was tested at 720p with low settings and FSR.

Another game ETA Prime has tested on the Steam Deck OLED is Elden Ring. At 720p and low settings, Lossless Scaling allowed the game to run at an average of 61 FPS, while it was 33 FPS with the scaling turned on. Other games that were tested offered similar FPS boosts.

Overall, the software appears to be worth the price, and it's not just for gaming handhelds (Legion Go curr. $598.99 on Amazon). It will work on gaming laptops and even desktops. You can learn more by watching ETA Prime's video attached below.
