Tesla makes the Cybertruck easier to park but testing reveals some blind spots
Tesla was supposed to anoint the owners of its $100,000 Cybertruck electric pickup with support for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) option this month, according to Elon Musk.
The latest FSD v12.5 release does include Cybertruck support indeed, but the update hasn't yet hit its computer, as Tesla apparently needs some more testing to be done.
The Cybertruck has been spotted donning a LiDAR on the roof, though, and Tesla's AI chief promised that its FSD update will be launching in September, so the big day is nearing. The Cybertruck carries the latest AI4 hardware suite of computer and cameras of Tesla, so it should have no problem running FSD 12.5.
While the Cybertruck owners wait for the FSD support update, however, Tesla promised that it will bring "parking assistance features, given that it ain't exactly the easiest vehicle to park," and it delivers just that with the2024.26.11 software update now.
Unfortunately, this is not the self-parking option of the FSD service, but simply Tesla's Vision Park Assist that relies on the cameras to park instead of the deprecated ultrasonic parking sensors.
Still, it would be a welcome upgrade for Cybertruck owners, especially when backing into tight parking spaces.
The Cybertruck's new parking assistance option has immediately been put to the test, too, to see if it works as advertised.
As can be seen in the video below, there are still some kinks and blind spots to be ironed out. The Cybertruck is Tesla's only vehicle with a frontbumper camera meant precisely for parking purposes. Its new Vision Park Assist feature, however, doesn't seem to leverage the front bumper camera enough, if at all.
It was also skewed when it comes to line detection, or overly cautious with curbs and other vehicles during turn maneuvers to enter a place. Still, it is an early release that will hopefully get better with time.
