Ireland weather: Hopes grow for warm and dry weekend as Met Eireann pinpoints Sunday as best day for sunshine

Ireland is set to experience a period of warm and dry weather, according to Met Eireann.

The national forecaster has said that there are "indications of drier and more settled weather developing".

While Met Eireann has ruled out 'heatwave' conditions at this stage, temperatures are expected to climb above 20C across much of the country this weekend.

Some areas could potentially reach 23C by next week.

Long-range weather maps, which are subject to change this far out, also appear to support this hopeful outlook.

Current predictions suggest that temperatures could climb above 20C across much of Ireland this weekend, with some areas potentially reaching 23C by next week.

The national forecaster pinpointed Sunday as the best day of the upcoming forecast for warm sunshine.

It said: "Early indications suggest the weekend will be mostly dry with spells of warm sunshine developing, especially on Sunday.

"However, there is still the chance of a few showers, mainly in the west and northwest."

The predicted weather U-turn may come as a surprise to some amid the current unsettled conditions, which are forecast to continue for the rest of the working week.

A Status Yellow rain warning has been issued for Clare, Cork, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo from 10pm tonight until 10am tomorrow.

It warns of "heavy and persistent rain at times" with the potential for flooding, difficult travelling conditions and disruptions to outdoor events.

Today's overall forecast warns that thunderstorms are also possible.

It states: "Dry in many areas early this afternoon with a mix of cloud and some bright or sunny spells.

"However, thicker cloud will spread from the Atlantic this afternoon with rain developing in Atlantic coastal areas, turning heavier and more persistent in the evening.

"Rain will extend nationwide during the evening. Highest temperatures of 17C to 22C with strengthening southerly winds.

"Wet and windy tonight with outbreaks of heavy rain bringing the possibility of localised flooding, especially in Atlantic areas. An isolated thunderstorm is possible also. Temperatures not falling below 13C to 16C in fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds."

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, Tuesday will start wet, with rain moving eastward and a chance of localised flooding.

By the afternoon, the rain will clear to reveal sunny spells and isolated showers. Temperatures will range from 18C to 22C in fresh southerly breezes.

Wednesday will bring sunny spells and showers, some heavy with possible thunder, and temperatures of 16C to 19C.

Thursday is expected to be bright with plenty of sunshine and a few scattered showers. Temperatures will range from 15C to 18C.

Friday will likely be mostly cloudy with scattered rain and drizzle, and temperatures of 15C to 18C.
