On Monday, Bukele took to Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) X to pitch the Central American nation as one that protects civil liberties.

"Move to El Salvador. In our country we don't jail or censor anyone for exercising their right to free speech. Open your Telegram offices here."

His remarks were made in reference to the arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France over the weekend, which sparked concerns among tech enthusiasts and free speech advocates.

Musk, who earlier expressed shock and dismay at the Telegram CEO's arrest, cheered Bukele's assurance on free speech, replying to the president's tweet with the comment: "Awesome."

El Salvador was ranked 133th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index 2024, down 18 places from the previous year's rankings.
