Scantech unveils wireless Simscan-E handheld laser scanner to rapidly create 3D models from real-world objects

Scantech has unveiled the wireless Simscan-E handheld laser scanner to rapidly create 3D models from real-world objects. The 3D models can be used to verify production accuracies, create virtual models, and replicate parts.

Normally, there are two ways to create 3D models for use by 3D printers to print parts or by software to verify production accuracy. One way is where a person uses a 3D modeling program like Solidworks or Maya to manually draw the model, and this can take hours for complex parts. Another way is where a person uses a 3D scanner on a real-world object to create a CG model in minutes, even seconds. The disadvantage of a scanner is that every point of the CG model is never perfectly placed, so the accuracy of the model depends on the accuracy of the scanner used.

The Simscan-E has three scanning modes, ultra-fast, hyperfine, and deep hole, to handle a variety of complex objects from architectural details to automotive parts. In ultra-fast mode, 63 laser lines arranged along three angles enable the maximum scanning rate of 6,300,000 measurements per second. In hyperfine mode, 17 parallel laser lines enable a maximum object scan accuracy of 0.0078 inches (0.020 mm). In deep hole mode, the scanner can scan inside objects up to 21.4 inches (550 mm) distant.

The Simscan-E weighs 1.3 pounds (600 g) and measures 7.9 x 3.1 x 1.7 inches (203 x 80 x 44 mm). The scanner has a scanning area of 27.2 x 23.3 inches (700 x 600 mm) for each scan. When scanning large objects, the scanner has a volume accuracy of 0.015 mm + 0.035 mm/m. The scanner can be used wirelessly while powered by a swappable battery pack or tethered to a power source.

Readers who are just trying to scan their D&D figurines can try a cheaper, lower-resolution 3D scanner (like this one on Amazon) or a pricier, higher-resolution 3D scanner (like this one on Amazon).
