Google Gemini now in the Gmail app: Smart email search via AI on Android devices

Google is expanding its Gmail app at Android with an AI-powered Q&A function which was already available in the web version of Gmail and is powered by Google's Gemini AI assistant. Users can now search their inbox more efficiently by asking specific questions to the AI - for example, "Do I have any unanswered emails from Anna?" or "When did I receive the last email from my landlord?".

The function is accessible via a new icon in the top right-hand corner of the app and is now available on Android devices. As Google explained in its announcement, Gemini will also soon be rolled out for the Gmail app on iOS devices:

"Today, we’re excited to announce that the Gmail Q&A feature is rolling out now on Android devices and coming soon to iOS."

However, Gemini is currently only available to paying users who have a subscription such as Gemini Business ($18 per month and user) or Google One AI Premium ($22 per month). Google emphasizes that all interactions with Gemini in Gmail are end-to-end encrypted and the data is not used for advertising purposes. However, users should still be aware that their email content is processed by the AI.
