Google releases new thermometer features for Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL in Europe with latest update
Under a month has passed since Google quietly brought new thermometer features to not just the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, but also the older Pixel 8 Pro (curr. $592 - renewed on Amazon). Following that, the company has confirmed that none of its recent Pixel devices will receive Android 15 until October. For context, the arrival of this year's update could be upwards of a month after it reaches the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
In the wake of that announcement, Google has decided to expand the functionality of the temperature sensorPixel 8 Pro,Pixel 9 ProandPixel 9 Pro XLin Europe. Until now, it has been possible to measure the temperature of food, liquid and other objects in Europe. By contrast, thePixel 8 Prohas been capable of calculating skin temperature since January in North America. However, a forthcoming update for the Pixel Thermometer app should remove that geo-block in Europe.
Consequently, the trio should soon be capable of measuring someone's temperature, during which the Pixel Thermometer app will deliver voice instructions to position the temperature sensor correctly in order to deliver the most accurate readings. For reference, the whole process should only take about four seconds. Unfortunately, Google has decided against offering a live preview when measuring skin temperature, as it now does when taking the temperature of other objects. Nonetheless, it will be possible to store recent skin temperature results in the Pixel Thermometer app or export them to the Fitbit app if necessary.
