IFA 2024 | €599 Honor MagicPad 2 launches globally as 12.3-inch Galaxy Tab S9+ killer with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, 66 W fast charging, and 144 Hz flicker-free AMOLED display

Update: Honor has priced the MagicPad 2 at £499 in the UK and €599 in the rest of Europe, putting it right in between the Galaxy Tab S9 FE Plus and Galaxy Tab S9 Plus — likely a good spot, given its hardware capabilities.

At IFA 2024, Honor has confirmed that the MagicPad 2 launches globally today as a shot across the bow of the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 and Apple iPad series, and the hardware and expected price may pose a serious threat to the current flagship tablets.

The Honor MagicPad 2 has the same hardware as the Chinese version we previously covered, meaning it'll be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, which falls somewhere in between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and full-fledged 8 Gen 3 in terms of performance. This SoC, along with anywhere between 8–16 GB of RAM, should make the MagicPad 2 plenty powerful for everything from productivity and multitasking to light gaming and digital art.

The rest of the tablet's specifications back it up as an all-rounder too, thanks to its 12.3-inch, 144 Hz OLED display with a resolution of 3,000 × 1,920 pixels and a claimed peak brightness of 1600 nits. That display, Honor claims, is also of the flicker-free variety, with a PWM frequency of 4320 Hz — a claim supposedly backed up by TÜV certification. This high PWM frequency caters to a market of people that are sensitive to PWM flickering often exhibited by OLED displays, especially when they get to lower brightness levels.

Much like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Plus it will be going up against, the Honor MagicPad 2 has pen support, with the Honor Magic Pencil 3 claiming 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and 2 ms of latency. The MagicPad 2 also steps things up in terms of charging speeds, with the 10,050 mAh battery capable of charging at a respectable 66 W.

All this is to say that the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tabs of the world will soon have some more affordable competition in the global market. Honor has not yet confirmed a global price for the MagicPad 2, but it should be a lot closer to — or even less than — the $499 Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Plus, rather than the $969.99 of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Plus.
