South Carolina Launches Explore SC@Work Campaign to Educate Students and Job Seekers About Promising Occupations
With so many opportunities on the table, students — and even adults — may not know about available occupations, the futures they provide or how to get started.
The Department of Employment and Workforce recently launched its Explore SC@Work campaign, highlighting various occupations on its website and social media. This initiative aims to inform students and jobseekers about available careers, futures they provide, and how to get started.
The campaign includes a gallery page and flyers that provide snapshots of each occupation, including salary estimates, education requirements, and other real-world statistics and tools.
The Department of Employment and Workforce has also partnered with Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette on the Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders initiative, which inspires teenagers to gain soft skills through part-time work and connects them to opportunities through its Youth Employment Site.
The Education Department aspires for every student to be college-, career- or military-ready once they leave high school and is proud of the 65% of high school graduates identified in 2024 as college- or career-ready, and passionately committed to growing this number in the years to come.
Many Career and Technical Education programs in South Carolina are high school courses that teach students the skills and knowledge needed for specific jobs or fields of work. These programs provide both the life skills and hard skills training that prepare students seeking a seamless transition into work right after high school. For the 2022-23 school year alone, more than 38,000 students earned national or state credentials through these programs in South Carolina.
The Education Department has also recently won the 2024 State Leadership Award from the Southern Regional Education Board for implementing workforce-aligned college and career-readiness strategies, with two of its local Career and Technical Education programs being highlighted for their achievements.
Finding innovative ways to educate students about promising occupations and provide career-readiness resources is a passion we and our employees share. While 4-year college remains a wonderful option for some, we know that there are many pathways to well-paying careers that can be found through two-year degrees, certifications, apprenticeships or other occupational training.
