There have been multiple reports about Qualcomm increasing the price of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 compared to its current-gen flagship SoC. Digital Chat Station, a notable leakster, reported about it back in May, which was later reinforced with a separate reportin the same month.
Now, Ice Universe, another renowned tipster, reports that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is 20.68% more expensive than the predecessor. More specifically, Ice Universe says that Qualcomm sells each of the next-gen SoCs at $240, almost half of the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphones (12/256 GB Redmi K70 Pro curr. $507.76 on Trading Shenzen).
In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 reportedly costs $200. As for whether the increased cost is justified, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to bring notable improvements. Per the datasheet slide leakfrom last month, the new SoC will be the first mobile chip from Qualcomm to feature in-house Oryon cores.
Qualcomm has already used Oryon cores in its Snapdragon X series ARM chips for Windows laptops, and they compete against the notable x86 processors from Intel and AMD. The leaked slide also suggests that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will have an upgraded Adreno 8-series GPU.
Of course, Ice Universe's report on the price of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 isn't an official figure. Qualcomm can also treat some manufacturers differently, so the cost per unit won't be the same for all. For example, Samsung gets some exclusivity with Qualcomm's mobile chips, with its flagship phones getting the "For Galaxy" variant of new SoCs. So, take this pricing info with some grains of salt.
