Retroid confirms upgrades for Pocket Mini and Pocket 5 retro gaming handhelds with shipment dates also revealed

Retroid has elaborated on its release plans for not just the upcoming Pocket 5, but also the smaller Pocket Mini. To recap, only a few days have passed since the company confirmed launch pricing for the pair, as well as a release date and all key hardware specifications. However, it has now decided to improve the Pocket 5 in two areas before the device ships later this year.

To that end, Retroid now reports that the Pocket 5 will begin shipping at the end of October, a month after it expects to begin fulfilling Pocket Mini pre-orders. Allegedly, that timeframe will give the company enough time to configure the Pocket 5 with 8 GB of RAM, a 33% increase from the 6 GB of RAM with which it was previously slated to ship. The Pocket Mini will continue to ship with 6 GB of RAM, though; Retroid is leaving both devices with GB of storage, too.

Additionally, Retroid reports that the Pocket 5 will now be pre-installed with Android 13, not Android 10. Arguably, a jump of three Android versions will help the Pocket 5 better compete against the AYN Odin2 (curr. $449 on Amazon), although the former will likely trail the latter in Android and retro gaming performance. At any rate, Retroid expects to upgrade the Pocket Mini to Android 13 too, but not until the end of the year after it ships with Android 10. Please note that Retroid will begin selling the Pocket 5 and Pocket Mini at 01:00 UTC on September 10.
