MUGHAL: Jahangir, 1605-1628, AV sawai mohur (heavy mohur) (13.60g), Agra, AH1018 year 4, NGC MS61

This lot is a gold sawai mohur (heavy mohur) issued by the Mughal emperor Jahangir during his reign from 1605 to 1628. The coin weighs 13.60 grams and was struck at the Agra mint in AH1018 (year 4 of his reign). It features the Khusru couplet on the obverse and the Persian inscription nur al-din shah jahangir ibn akbar badshah. The regnal date is inscribed to the left, and the mint and Hijri date are noted on the reverse. The coin has a striking design with excellent eye appeal and is graded MS61 by NGC. It is estimated to sell for $35,000 to $40,000.

BRITISH INDIA: Victoria, Queen, 1837-1876, AV 5 rupees, 1870(c), Proof 65

This lot is a gold 5 rupees coin issued by Queen Victoria during her reign over British India from 1837 to 1876. The coin was struck at the Calcutta Mint in 1870(c) and is a proof restrike. It is perfectly preserved with mirror-like luster and is an outstanding example with a prodigious grade (with only one superior example at PR65+). The coin is graded Proof 65 by NGC and is RR. It was sold in the Heritage ANA Signature Sale 3094, lot 34871, and is from the Louis E. Eliasberg Collection. It is estimated to sell for $10,000 to $14,000.

ABBASID: al-Muqtadir, 908-932, AV donative double dinar (8.58g), Madinat al-Salam, AH299, NGC UNC de

This lot is a gold donative double dinar issued by the Abbasid caliph al-Muqtadir during his reign from 908 to 932. The coin weighs 8.58 grams and was struck at the Madinat al-Salam mint in AH299. It features the standard design as on the normal dinar (A-245.2), but it was produced with larger dies on a broader planchet (29mm), which is the same for silver dirhams of Madinat al-Salam around AH299. There is a trace of mount at the top and a light scrape on the reverse. This is a most important issue of al-Muqtadir, apparently unknown for any mint or date and is unique. The coin is graded UNC details by NGC. It is estimated to sell for $10,000 to $12,000.

ALMORAVID: Abu Bakr b. Yahya, fl. 1147/48, AV dinar (4.17g), Dar'a, AH542, bold XF

This lot is a gold dinar issued by Abu Bakr b. Yahya during his rule over the Almoravid dynasty in 1147/48. The coin weighs 4.17 grams and was struck at the Dar'a mint in AH542. It features the traditional Almoravid design and legends, with the name abu bakr bin / yahya below kalima in the obverse field and the mint and date in the reverse margin.
