PlayStation 5 Pro announced with a larger SSD, faster GPU, and no disk drive

Sony has finally lifted the covers off its newest console, the PlayStation 5 Pro. It comes after months of speculations and leaks, one of which zeroed in on its release date with near-pinpoint accuracy. Like its predecessor, the PlayStation 5 Pro improves upon the regular PlayStation 5 with its new GPU. As predicted earlier, it comes with Sony's own flavour of AI-powered image upscaling tech, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution or PSSR.

Sony aims to bridge the gap between "performance" and "fidelity" modes in modern-day games with the PlayStation 5 Pro. As far as its innards are concerned, Sony says its new GPU is 45% faster than the regular PlayStation 5 thanks to a 67% increase in CU count. Performance-wise, it will trade blows with AMD's Radeon RX 7700 XT. Furthermore, the console comes with a host of new raytracing features, some of which were revealed by this leak from a few weeks ago. Lastly, Sony also gives you a 2 TB SSD with every PlayStation 5 Pro, a much-needed upgrade given the rising sizes of modern-day games.

Other notable upgrades include Wi-Fi 7 and VRR support. While you get a shiny 2 TB SSD with your console, you do not get a vertical stand and disk drive. Both have to be purchased separately. The former costs $30 and the latter $80. Combine that with the PlayStation 5 Pro's listed price of $699, and you'll need to spend a total of $810 (pre-tax) for the upgrade. Thankfully, Sony has promised to enhance up to 8,500 last and current-gen titles for the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Eligible titles will have their resolutions and framerates upgraded and identifiable with a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label within their title. Pre-orders start on September 26, with general sales commencing on November 7. Of course, this applies only to a handful of markets, so be sure to check with your local Sony retailer to find out when you can purchase the console in your region.
