Google opens AI Test Kitchen & Imagen 3 to most users

Google's AI Test Kitchen, which includes a suite of AI design tools for users to play with, has now opened up to users in well over 100 countries worldwide. This move marks the first time that many around the world will be able to use Imagen 3, Google's latest in-house AI image generation software, in any official capacity. TextFX, MusicFX, ImageFX, and VideoFX are all part of the kitchen, but users will have to join a waitlist for the latter.

ImageFX, powered by Imagen 3, is the clear star of the show, and easily the most practical of the available tools for most people. The interface is a boiled-down version of text-to-image generators; those familiar with things like NightCafe or Dall-E will feel at ease. The generator is powerful at its core, able to outperform many other models in photorealism, and tough subjects like text. ImageFX stands out as the best way to use Imagen 3 for two reasons; the model will suggest words in the prompt that can be changed for a different output, and users can select their favorite image from an output sample, then select a part of it to tweak with a new prompt.

MusicFX is a bit less practical, but is nonetheless powerful. Users can enter a text prompt indicating things like mood, style, and what musical conventions or instruments are to be used in a given piece, and MusicFX will generate a 30-second snippet of music in response. The outputs tend to be chaotic and not musically cohesive, but it's easy to tell, in most cases, that the model is attempting to implement what was prompted.

TextFX is a tool that can put a spin on your writing. There are a number of different prompt types available, each with its own capabilities. Users can put in a sample or a topic, and do things with it like find related terms that offer alliteration, create acronyms, break words down into root words, and more. It is worth noting that the tool was created in collaboration with American rapper Lupe Fiasco, and includes video tutorials featuring him using the various prompts on offer.

VideoFX is the only tool in the suite that's not widely available yet. It is a text-to-video tool, comparable to OpenAI's Sora, that's supposed to generate dynamic output in a short time. Users who are interested in trying it out can join a waitlist, which will grant them access to other Google AI experiments as they roll out.
